Yumi And The System

Yumi And The System – Nashville, TN

I have become increasingly obsessed with these music reality shows.  My most recent addiction is this show called Platinum Hit on Bravo.  They put a bunch of hopeful songwriters together out here in Hollywood and they are given songwriting tasks.  It really is brilliant and insightful into the process of songwriting.  So I get floated some music for a singer/songwriter whose current project is titled Yumi And The System.  I am ready to get my “Platinum Hit” on and tear apart structure and attack the songs for their “disjointed nature and elementary metaphors”, not possible with this project.

It is equal parts Karen O and one of my favorite European bands, The Scanners, set to driving rhythms with pristine programming.  There is a distance to Yumi’s vocals like she’s disconnected from the moment and looking at something off in the distance.  It’s that same type of distance that I get from Paul Banks’ vocals from Interpol.  Whatever it is, I like it.  I could envision bumping into Yumi in Silverlake, driving a disheveled car with some character dents and a bumper sticker that reads, “Drum Machines Have No Soul”…which to Yumi is the perfect irony.  I think she loves drum machines but I sense that she hates reality shows and probably doesn’t even own a TV.  Her writing and music is all that she needs.
